The idea that taking 10,000 steps a day will make you healthy or live longer is very misleading.
It makes me a bit frustrated when I hear someone say
“Hey Mac, I’m doing good, I got in 6000 steps”
I always coach positively so I often say something like “Nice!”, or “Wow, that’s a big improvement.”
Inside, I know it’s really not enough to help them live longer, better lives…
Or look and feel great…
In fact, Its a lie…
It’s an arbitrary number from a study done by a Japanese pedometer company. Even the CDC only recommends 7K steps per day.
Now, I don’t want you to think I just let people walk away thinking they have the “golden ticket” of health and longevity by doing steps.
I use it as a chance to help save their life. I tell them, if they are open to it, that yes 10,000 steps a day is better than 247 steps a day.
But…. (you knew that was coming)
It’s not comprehensive enough to make you live a better more enjoyable life.
What if you are out on a walk “getting your steps in” and you trip over a root, and hit the deck?
And you haven’t used your arms, legs, or core to get up off of the ground in months or years?
And now maybe you are injured too? It hurts to put pressure on your palm or elbow.
What are you going to do then?
Sorry, but that’s how I think.
You have this one body, and you want to use it, but you need to work on it.
Doing 10k steps is like driving your car enough to get the fluids warm, but never washing your windows, or putting air in your tires.
Your engine works, but you can’t see where you are going and your brakes are shot.
The basic secret is to maintain all of the car (your body) by understanding it’s integrated, you need all of it.
What if you could pick any car in the world to be your car?
Regardless of price, gas money etc…
Now imagine you have it… Cruising around in it…
But, it’s the ONLY car you’re ever going to get…
That’s your body.
That’s how you take care of it. You need all of it.
